                                  HERITAGE

Dr Pastor Hanfere Aligaz was born & raised, in the city of Woldiya, Ethiopia from an Orthodox Christian & Islamic family. When Aligaz became a born again Christian in 1977 he was an active member of a charismatic church in Ethiopia. Also, worked for the Ethiopian Airlines as a pilot and run a private family business. As his life changed 1980, the Holy Spirit planted the challenge in Hanfere Aligaz’s heart to plant a new church in America. Trusting and obeying the specific call from God, Aligaz fled communist Ethiopia in 1981 and arrived in the United States with his wife Yetenayet Aligaz and 4 children.

At that time he didn’t know anything about being a pastor or an evangelist,” but he sensed God wanted him to plant a church in the U.S. capital.

Hanfere Aligaz founded the International Ethiopian Evangelical Church of Washington, D.C., with 15 people one year after he and his wife and their four children defected from their communist-run homeland. The church has grown since then with several branch churches in the U.S. (Maryland, Virginia, New York, Florida, South Carolina) and internationally (Egypt, Lebanon, Djibouti, and Ethiopia). Preparation is also underway to establish a church in South Sudan. Pastor Hanfere currently oversees a total of 21 churches both in and outside of the U.S., and planning is in progress to open 5000 more churches (mainly in Ethiopia) in the near future.
